Poster design for New Zealand teen songwriting sensation Lorde’s recent 2 nighter at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley CA.

The visual metaphor of the single fish swimming the wrong way in the shoal refers to Lorde‘s notoriety in often challenging the popular and the mainstream. The raised fin (which doubles as a crown) also signifies the extra strength often necessary to go against the accepted. The hook to begin the name ties in with the fish motif but it also works to visually hint at the little barbs that are often prevalent in her lyrical themes.

The style and simplicity of the poster were primarily inspired by the repeat patterns Lorde often favors in her outfits and I think the flow of the shapes subtly suggests her trademark hairstyle. The fish themselves are just simple paper cutouts, created with an economy of means I think suits the stripped down nature of her music.
